AIESEC – Connecting People. Good Environment for Young Leaders

In our time of globalization and consolidation a lot of organizations aim at making the international communication better. AIESEC is one of the very special organizations which unites more than 45 000 students from over 107 countries. Primarily being a students’ community created to bring together the students from the countries of post-war Europe, it quickly grew into a large and numerous organization with its representatives in 1700 universities located in all parts of the world. The title is an acronym from French “Association International des Etudientes en Science Economique et Commercial” – the official name adopted in Stockholm in 1949. Within 60 years AIESEC has become the world’s largest youth-managed organization.

All its members attend seminars and trainings on different subjects and take responsibilities in certain spheres they find appropriate. It can be organization of international internship, conferences, economical or social projects etc.

The general goals of this international association are as follows:

2.Making positive contribution to the life of the native country and the whole world

3.Developing the leadership potential of the members

AIESEC is a non-political, non-commercial and independent association run by students themselves. Its participants gain a really valuable experience of taking responsibilities and internship in many world-known enterprises. Among its global partners there are such companies as Microsoft, Electrolux and Price Waterhouse Cooper and many representatives of these companies have been the members of AIESEC when studying at college.

Extracurricular activities at high school are often considered an unnecessary addition to the students’ life. Though studying and getting knowledge and skills are the primary tasks of every conscientious student gaining positive experience is not confined to the studies within the walls of university lecture-rooms. Any activity a student deals with apart from studies, brings diversity in his/her scope of interests and develops his/her social skills somehow.

5.Volunteer community service will also bring you indispensable experience. It may be pleasant and interesting too.

6.Taking part in a drama society or editorial staff of a faculty newspaper or a may also be of use. Some students have even connected their subsequent professional career with their extracurricular activities.

If you have a wide range of interests and enough time you may try your hand in a few spheres – the important thing here is to choose the activities you really like. If you take too many you may fail to cope with them all. So be sure to have enough activities to keep you interested but not too much to be a success in all of them.

National Science Foundation – a Chance to Advance Your Research

The National Science Foundation (NSF), a United States government agency that aims at supporting fundamental sciences and education programs in all the spheres not connected to the medicine, is the source of funds for lots of scientific and educational projects. The NSF issues limited-term grants to 10000 projects each year. The grants are distributed by the directorates which award the projects found the best in their area. There exist seven directorates overall.

The main criteria for supporting this or that science or education program are

1.the importance of the project that is offered for award to improvement of knowledge in the its field or some other fields, how high is the intellectual value of the researcher and how well the activity is arranged

2.the rate of advancing of participation of different subgroups, enhancement of infrastructure for researches and education and the general influence of the activity.

Fraternities and sororities are often mentioned in the modern American literature and movies. They seem to gain more and more popularity. The candidates for membership pass a kind of initiation – different in different organizations – after which they actually become the members of the organization. What do we know about this procedure?

So what is the challenge the newbie generally has to take to enter the community? This is a hard task. The new members are to stay on probation for about 5 months during which every candidate becomes practically a slave of their fraternal society. First they get a nickname – some can be very offensive, but you have no right to reject it and obviously have to mention it while introducing yourself. Then you learn the regulations and history of your fraternity/sorority by heart and master the dress-code and some rules existing in it. Each applicant gets some duties they must do for next five months. If you violate the rules, make a mistake or don’t cope with your task the punishment follows. The punishments are various – from eating a few onions and to being flogged with a special bat. But this is not the hardest time for the members to be.

The final week of probation is called the Hell Week – it’s the time of final challenge, which the new members are to survive. During this week the chapter house becomes a prison for those few left from the crowd of applicants. The conditions are really hell – the future member of the Greek letter organization may not leave the house, sleep, bathe or change for five days. They are tested and punished for mistakes, they eat the same food each day during the week. Only those who endure the challenge to the end enter the fraternity/sorority.
